Norwegian Ship-owners Association donates P8-M to RP typhoon victims
|
| |
OSLO, Norway - The Norwegian Shipping Association (NSA) turned over 1 million kroner (around P8 million) to the Red Cross here for its relief and rehabilitation work with the typhoon victims in the Philippines. In the hand-over ceremony held at the NSA office in Oslo, NSA Ceo Sturla Henriksen said his organization is "glad to be of help to the Philippines" and said he hopes that the money will "contribute both to the urgent relief efforts and to the long-term rebuilding of the flood-ravaged areas." Secretary General of the Norwegian Red Cross Boerge Brende who received the check on his organizations behalf, thanked the NSA and called the NSA donation as a "treasured contribution to the Red Cross reconstruction efforts" in the Philippines which was ravaged by two major typhoons, Ketsana and Parma (known in the Philippines as Ondoy and Pepeng) in September and October. He also assured the Philippine ambassador to Norway, Elizabeth Buensuceso who witnessed the turn-over, that the Red Cross in Norway will "make sure that those people who are most affected by (the typhoons) will have a new chance in going back to their situation before they were affected by the natural disasters." For her part, Ambassador Buensuceso said she was "overwhelmed by the expression of support of the NSA and Norway" who she revealed "took it upon themselves to come out and contribute in a large way to the victims of typhoons. Aside from the NSA contribution, Norway pledged 20 million kroner (160 million pesos) to the Philippines for its disaster response work. The International Red Cross issued an emergency appeal in October, urging other countries to give cash, kind, or services to the support the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) to scale up its responses to the disasters hitting the country. as of 12/07/2009 2:09 AM
